Trump Demands Jailing of Chicago Mayor and Illinois Governor as Military Forces Deploy in City

Ex-President Donald Trump on Wednesday called for the detainment of Mayor Brandon Johnson and Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, alleging them of not safeguarding ICE agents.

"The city's leader belongs behind bars for endangering Immigration agents!" Trump posted on his platform Wednesday morning. "Governor Pritzker as well!"

Both officials identify as the Democratic faction.

Trump's statements coincide with the deployment of National Guard troops in the Windy City area following directives from the federal administration, notwithstanding vehement protests from state officials including the governor and mayor.

"This marks yet another attempt where Trump attempted to have a Black man unjustly detained," Mayor Johnson stated on that day. "I'm not going put."

The governor responded via social platforms, declaring: "I refuse to yield. Trump is now calling for imprisonment of elected officials resisting his authority. What remains on the path to full-blown authoritarianism?"

By Wednesday morning, National Guard units from the Lone Star State had arrived at the Elwood army reserve center, an army base roughly 50 miles from Chicago, as the administration pushes forward with its hardline crime strategy and immigration enforcement operations.

Trump has labeled Chicago a "crime-ridden hellhole", even though police data indicate notable reductions in many offenses, such as murders.

That day, 200 Texas National Guard members were expected to deploy to the region, with another 300 Illinois guard personnel readying for deployment, according to reports. Authorities reportedly stated the soldiers would not perform law enforcement duties but would secure ICE officers and government buildings.

Soldiers in combat attire with state guard patches were spotted at the US army reserve center in the town. Trucks labeled "Emergency Disaster Services" delivered sanitation facilities and essential items. Mobile units were set up in lines. Additional fencing was installed around the perimeter.

Aviation authorities imposed no-fly zones over the army reserve center for safety concerns until early December.

Federal authorities has intensified deportation operations in the city in recent weeks, triggering demonstrations, especially near an immigration center in Broadview.

On Monday, Illinois and Chicago filed a lawsuit targeting the administration, attempting to halt the National Guard deployment, asking a federal judge to stop what they call "Trump's long-declared 'War'" on the city and state, labeling it "unlawful and dangerous".

Legal proceedings on their case is scheduled for the next day.

Mayor Johnson also issued an directive on Monday banning ICE officers and others from using municipal facilities as operation bases for deportation efforts.

The governor has accused the president of using troops as "staged tools" and "pawns".

At a news conference on the previous day, Pritzker said that Trump is attempting to "rationalize and normalize the presence of armed soldiers under his direct command."

The nearly 150-year-old Posse Comitatus Act restricts the military's role in civilian law enforcement. However, Trump has stated he would be willing to invoke the emergency powers, which allows a president to dispatch active duty military in regions that are failing to suppress an uprising or are defying national authority.

Since starting his second term, the president has sent or discussed sending military units to over ten urban centers, such as Baltimore; Washington DC; New Orleans and West Coast locations like Oakland, San Francisco and Los Angeles, arguing that the armed forces is essential to fight violence and protect immigration agents.

Data shows that serious offenses nationwide has declined in the past few years. In Chicago, for instance, homicides were reduced 31% to under three hundred through August, according to police data.

New survey data published on that day found that the majority of US citizens disapprove of the deployment of military forces without an external threat.
