It's the end of a long-standing era for ongoing anime, with the production studio announcing a revised release plan for the beloved series, which has run continuously for more than 25 years and included dozens of filler arcs. Commencing in January, once the current storyline concludes, the animated series will go on a three-month break until spring, when the next major arc kicks off.
Going forward, the series will produce a pair of cours every annually for a maximum of 26 episodes. The studio explains this will help the anime to “dive even deeper into the core of the ONE PIECE world — including more content, tempo, and timing of the source material.” Yet, Toei conclude by hinting at “thrilling developments” during the hiatus period, which suggests additional One Piece content, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, set to premiere during this gap.
The series anime had a six-month break that started in late 2024 and concluded in early 2025. The hiatus was for the animators to improve the visuals and allow the manga to build a lead to avoid a faster anime pace and lengthy recap episodes. The anime couldn't benefit more from this break, and it has been able to deliver fans with countless fight scenes, high-quality animation, and less filler than previously.
Although some recap episodes appeared during the recent run, the benefits of this updated approach greatly outweigh the occasional interruption in the action. This also gives the manga, which is currently in the middle of the latest arc, to extend its lead on the adaptation. According to the news, this may result in one episode of the series covering a single manga chapter, with some alternatively covering more material or more to make up for scheduling.
It's the end of a generation for anime, as One Piece is the last big series to abandon the old-school way of production, which prioritized being on air for almost the entire year. It's the reason why iconic series such as Bleach, and naturally itself have so many filler arcs, and the standard of the animation can vary widely between installments and the next. Nowadays, series creation is structured in cours, with one or two at most coming out each year, enabling better quality and greater accuracy to the original work.
